‘Oops! #metoo India’

The hush hush affair that went viral!

I’m instantly reminded of Mr. Amitabh Bachan standing in court of law speaking in his manly and authoritative voice, ‘No means no!’.  Well, this three word dialogue from the movie ‘Pink’ began a revolution in itself. The film portrayed the sad realities of the world we live in. #MeTooIndia is not just a hashtag, it has become the voice of a whole bunch of women across the world. Under this hashtag, many women have come forward and revealed the ghastly experiences of sexual harassment they’ve faced while pursuing their careers. Although majorly used by women, this movement has even encouraged men to speak up and tell their stories to the world. Well its not just bollywood, several media houses and politicians have also been named. #MeToo was originally started by Tarana Burke, an American social activist and community organizer in 2006. In 2017, Alyssa Milano popularized the phrase ‘Me Too’ by using it on twitter. This movement has travelled overseas, and its impact can now be seen in India. Famous men from various professions like Nana Patekar, Vikas Behl, Aloknath from bollywood and former journalist and Union Minister M.J. Akbar, people’s favourite authors like Chetan Bhagat and Kiran Nagarkar are amongst the few who’ve fallen prey to the wide spread movement.

Questions have been raised on the authenticity of these claims. The accused have questioned the women for the reasons of delay in announcing such a thing. The society is such, that despite so many women coming up with allegations against some men, the society ends up questioning women. Its high time the society questions the men for their outrageous acts. It takes a lot of courage on the part of these women/men to talk about such a traumatizing experience. Their courage hasn’t been praised, rather they’ve faced backlash. This movement is very sensitive, and most women who’ve come out in the open are telling the truth. But there are always some people who try to take advantage of the situation of the genuinely affected ones. Therefore, there are chances that there are some false accusations just to gain publicity. But it does not mean that all other cases are also like that.

Thus the #MeToo movement should be taken seriously, and for once the society should stand by the person who actually needs help. Misuse of this movement should be avoided, or it may lead to injustice, to all the survivors who’ve shown courage, by discussing such an issue in the public eye. This movement has also brought to light the fears women have before they come up with such an incident. Also that terms like sexual harassment have come to be associated only with women, while men might also be facing it. The victims should therefore be encouraged to stand up for themselves and to speak up for their rights. Men and should rather start a new movement #standup, stand up for the people who have become victims to these unfortunate incidents.
